Aside from the fine opening sequence - Lund's rescue of Gail Russell from the brink of suicide, and discovery of her mortal terror of the stars - a disappointing adaptation of Cornell Woolrich's superb novel, which is systematically emasculated and stripped of its darkly obsessional drive. On its own more conventional level, though, a reasonably gripping psychological thriller, with a fine performance from Edward G Robinson as a man haunted by his ability to foresee the future. Farrow makes it reasonably atmospheric (abetted by very fine camerawork from John F Seitz), but the script is marred by tiresome discussions as to whether extrasensory perception is rationally or scientifically accountable, and by a silly plot twist which allows for a (partly) happy ending.
