A distinct change of tack for writer-director Rozema after the quirky I've Heard the Mermaids Singing, this strange, arty film follows a weedy voyeur (Godin) who witnesses a pop star's murder and meets a reclusive mystery woman who has the dead singer's voice. Although Sheila McCarthy provides a little light relief as the voyeur's wacky sidekick, and Kate Nelligan makes a strong impression as the recluse, the film virtually falls into abstraction. Imagine a Brian De Palma script directed by Jane Campion - or, better yet, watch it for yourself.
