Holden plays the aspiring young artist in Hong Kong who falls for a Chinese prostitute (Kwan), and despite major difficulties - like his loathing of her way of life, a poor script, and the restrictions that taste demanded of films in those days - their relationship flourishes for a while. But denied the chance of being honest about its subject, it soon degenerates into euphemistic soap opera, with vague gestures towards bohemianism and lukewarm titillation. Wisely, Quine seems to have devoted most of his attention to the Hong Kong locations.
