Despite the presence of Karloff - as a humanitarian doctor of the 1840s whose experiments with anaesthetics lead to drug addiction and involvement with body-snatchers - this often seems to be little more than an excuse for detailed coverage of some utterly gruesome operations and the systematic mutilation of patients on the operating table. There are some compensations, however, notably a cunningly atmospheric recreation of Victorian London from Day (who made the infinitely superior Grip of the Strangler), and a brief but superbly stylish appearance by Christopher Lee as a soft-spoken villain.
