Elvis (1979)
Director: John Carpenter
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
The TV movie trimmed by half-an-hour and with The Movie added to the title when released theatrically in Britain in 1979. A biopic ending in 1969 (and framed by Elvis' triumphant return to Las Vegas in July of that year), it alternates periods of brash psychologising with creditable re-enactments of some legendary performances. Carpenter copes best with the minutiae of a star at tenuous leisure, but wasn't around for the post-production overseen by Dick Clark. The result is inevitably compromised, but compulsive.
