Escape (1997)
Director: Livia Gyarmathy
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
Hungary, just a few years on from the country's liberation from fascism, and the new Communist regime is settling in nicely, filling the prisons with political dissenters. This is the true story of one such innocent, as he spends two years in a secret labour camp before effecting a daring escape. He has memorised the names of his fellow internees in the hope of bringing the story to the outside world, but half the Hungarian army seems to be on his trail. Not unexpectedly, a fairly dour piece of film-making, but it does tell its story with a certain gritty urgency, and there's a fine performance from Olbrychski as the steely camp commandant.Author: TJ
