Dekalog 4: 'Honour thy father and thy mother' (1988)
Director: Krzysztof Kieslowski
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
Easter. Young acting student Anka (Biedrzynska) lives with her architect father, as she has since her mother's death in childbirth. They have a close relationship, and josh each other with the easy intimacy of lovers. Her relationship with her boyfriend, on the other hand, she finds far more difficult. Her father leaves for a trip abroad, and asks her to attend to some unpaid bills. Looking in a drawer for them, she finds an old envelope marked in her father's hand, 'To be opened in the event of my death', and inside it another envelope addressed, presumably in her mother's writing, to 'My darling Anka'. What truth can it contain? When her father returns, they drink vodka and she challenges him to a game of Truth or Dare... Kieslowski's masterly film addresses the question of incest - more properly, incestuous impulses and their roots - and has all the discomforting compulsion of watching open-heart surgery. The performances by Biedrzynska and Gajos as the father are astounding.Author: WH
