Already in quiet crisis, Nete's life with husband (Lyby) and teenage daughter (Egelind) comes under further strain when her father (Ernst) is diagnosed with leukaemia. Presuming that the family can cope, Nete, a 35-year-old social worker, insists that the old man moves into their poky apartment for his last few weeks - but, how many weeks will that be exactly? A month later, chain smoking and generally cluttering up the place, he's still going strong; Nete asks the doctors for a definite expiry date. Not that she's heartless, but uncertainty isn't her forte. Dogme stalwart Paprika Steen is outstanding as Nete. What took her so long to land her first leading role? Keenly observed without being patronising, comic without spilling into farce, and compassionate without succumbing to sentimentality, this low key drama is an honest portrayal of a family struggling to accommodate a familiar old git as they face the alien, terribly sad, and absurd finality of his death.Author: SS
