Family (2001)
Director: Sami Saif, Phie Ambo-Nielsen
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
Sami is looking for the father he barely remembers, the one who abandoned the family when he was eight. Moreover, Sami has to tell his father that his mother died an alcoholic, and his older brother committed suicide. Sami's only lead: his mother had told him that his father was a pilot who had lost his legs. City Hall, on the other hand, has the man leaving Denmark for Yemen - and that's where the trail hots up. Sami's journey of self-recovery packs a real emotional wallop, not least for his honesty about his own lies, and his bouts of panic and anger. Further, he has an expressive face that signals emotion at a hundred paces. The video diary format is punctuated with shots of sometimes self-conscious beauty, as the film explores what it means to share blood ties with strangers from an alien culture.Author: TCh
