Graham Greene's The Power and the Glory given typically Fordian treatment, in that the moral complexities of the novel have been replaced by simplicity, picturesque poetry, and emotional power. Fonda plays the priest pursued by police and informers in an anti-clerical Latin American country, wandering the countryside in search of sanctuary and someone to understand him. It's generally one of Ford's most turgid efforts, slow, overstated, and with an annoying tendency towards obvious religious symbolism. But one cannot deny the beauty of Gabriel Figueroa's glowing photography.Author: GA
