Classic example of Hollywood easing its conscience about the Spanish Civil War (never identified by name) while carefully hedging its bets. Scripted by John Howard Lawson (later one of the Hollywood Ten), it's littered with pseudo-echoes of Soviet movies as Fonda's peasant rabbits on about his love of the soil, while Carroll does the Dietrich bit as a spy suffering romance and a change of heart. Totally spurious, though well shot (Rudolph Maté) and directed, it ends in cringing embarrassment with Fonda making an appeal to camera for the world to stop this war.
