Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
'What are Bollywood and Hollywood but different wood cut from the same tree?' A rhetorical question from Mehta, the Canadian-based film-maker best known for her taboo-breaking dramas Fire and Earth (the third in the trilogy, Water, awaits completion). This Toronto-set film is a joyful mish-mash of Indian and American plot clichés played for second generation laughs. Rahul Seth, a Canadian Indian millionaire, is devastated when his pop star girlfriend meets a tragic end. His mother threatens to postpone his sister's imminent wedding unless he finds another, more suitable bride. When Rahul meets Sue, an escort girl who could pass for Indian, and is willing to play his fiancée, he thinks she's the solution. But once Rahul and family have fallen for Sue, they find her identity is more complicated than anyone imagined. The film oozes chutzpah, but regrettably the dance scenes don't match the sparkle of the performances. A pleasing romp, nevertheless - both studio systems should feel proud.Author: AF
