As adapted by Buck Henry, Terry Southern's genuinely, wickedly funny novel - a Candide-style sex satire, about a naive American teenage girl whose innocence automatically provokes the men she meets to feverish, rapacious lust - is neither erotic nor funny. Aulin, besides being unable to act, can't manage an American accent; her various sexual encounters are ludicrously over-long; and quite what the film is meant to be satirising remains obscure throughout. Indeed, it's a typically undisciplined example of late '60s movie-making, dependent on a bland series of caricature cameos from decent actors who should have known better. Burton's Dylan Thomas parody alleviates the tedium temporarily, but Marquand simply doesn't seem to know what directing is all about; the overall effect is profoundly exhausting.
