A young-ish drifter takes a job waiting at an unprepossessing, old fashioned and strictly run hotel in small town Sweden, where he falls for a waitress and gets involved in the none too promising plans for a robbery dreamed up by another staff member. Andersson's commercially disastrous second feature is a real oddity. It starts as if it's a desert-dry deadpan comedy about hotel life, begins to take on allegorical/religious dimensions (purgatory, temptation, sin), and ends as a slightly overextended thriller-cum-romance. Though it is so low key that it's unsurprising it bombed, it's not without intelligence, wit or interest.Author: GA
