Promise (1986)
Director: Yoshihige Yoshida
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
An old woman is found dead: hubby confesses to murdering her. What starts out as a whodunit thriller evolves into a flashback meditation on the effects of senility, both on the victim and on the family that tries to support its elders. All very sensitive, and quite powerful in its tentative argument in support of euthanasia, but it's relentlessly grim, over-reliant on symbolism (water, mirrors), and often tediously repetitive. But the performances and imaginative, precisely composed photography work wonders in counteracting boredom.Author: GA
