Splash (1984)
Director: Ron Howard
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
The beauty here is that the love is purely innocent. Not quite sexually innocent, although the carnal problems of falling for a mermaid are handled very well by the movie, which simply ignores them; rather, it is a love which has nothing to do with getting to know him, or his friends, or whether you like his apartment, or his job. It is love without conditions, much as in E.T., except that here, one half of the match (Hanks) is adult, and the other half (Hannah) considerably more attractive than the waddling mud pie. Howard demonstrates exactly the correct soft touch, skirting the myriad problems of taste; and Hannah, who was the punkish replicant in Blade Runner, is somehow, very much, right there.
