Surveillance (1997)
Director: Huang Jianxin
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
This is a sort-of thriller, but as in Huang's 'urban attitude' trilogy the emphasis is on humour, human foibles and the fallibility of 'the system'. Ye is a hard-working security guard who has a good sexual relationship with his girlfriend. At just the moment that he's assigned to a round-the-clock stake-out, a rival for the girl's affections turns up in the shape of her handsome former boyfriend. There's plenty of incident (Ye nearly starves to death before we find out whether or not he'll get the girl), but Huang sensibly leaves some mysteries unsolved. The best thing here is seeing what he makes of a 'mystical' relationship born from a misdialled phone number.Author: TR
