Raga (1971)
Director: Howard Worth
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
A very reasonable documentary about Ravi Shankar, very uncritical about him and very critical about some of the ways the West has assimilated his music. Full rein is given to Shankar's belief in the importance of authority, tradition, the guru in music, with some good footage of Indian 'culture' to back it all up. Thankfully you get to hear a sizeable amount of music in different contexts, from Western pop and classical to Indian traditional. All in all, an adequate delve into a musician who deserves a lot of respect. The clichés are there, but are pleasantly unobtrusive. George Harrison can't be too happy with the way he comes over, though. JDuC.Author: JDuC
