From Time Out Film Guide

John 'Rappin' Hood (Van Peebles) and his band of merry poets take on the baddies, a stop-at-nothing property development corporation and the gang recruited to terrorise the tenants they wish to evict; it seems that all Hood & Co have to do is break into verse and everything is suddenly right as rain. Peppered with offensive stereotypes, the only light relief comes when the hip crew succumb to another rapattack. It's not an unmitigated disaster, but the absurd grand finale, at the crucial public hearing where the power of rap conquers all, pushes it irrevocably over the edge.
