Jobert plays (rather well) a juvenile delinquent who decides she can't take it when her lesbian cellmate is released from jail. So she escapes, breaking her astragalus (an ankle-bone) in the process: a metaphor for her crippled life as she hobbles around on crutches, goes on the streets to support herself, suffers agonies of jealousy when her boyfriend (Buchholz, supplanting the lesbian) starts disappearing for long periods, and lives in constant terror of being trapped by the police. It is presumably meant to be all about solitude and the prisons of the mind, but Guy Casaril's flabbily uninspired direction succeeds only in making one wish Bresson had taken over.Author: TM
