Kuch Kuch Hota Hai (1998)
Director: Karan Johar
Movie review
From Time Out Film Guide
A runaway success on its limited British release, Johar's lavish debut feature has been made up in an English subtitled print. The story's pure corn: a spunky young lass grows up reading one new letter left for her by her dead mummy each birthday; the eighth and last reveals the story of the girl she was named after, cueing with infectious confidence an extended flashback to her daddy's romantic school daze. After the interval it's time to go find the lost lady, who's about to go compromise everything. The second, grown-up love triangle drags on far too long, but for well over two hours the film is hectically entertaining, its performances, camerawork, storytelling and extensive musical numbers all energetically colourful.Author: NB
