A sad example of the process of literary castration. By the time Galton and Simpson's script (which adds 'comic' scenes like a police bulldozer destroying a garden of gnomes and removes the more outrageous lines from Joe Orton's play) has passed through Narizzano's hands, all that is left is a caricature of the original. In place of the absurdity and emotional intensity, a collection of British character actors and a couple of stars go through their paces while the director milks Orton's story of misplaced affection and an elusive corpse for all it's worth.
