Movie review

From Time Out London

If you hear a strange pop while watching ‘Hannah Takes the Stairs’, it’s probably the sound of the mumblecore bubble bursting amid a sea of cooler-than-thou observational quips and interminable indie navel gazing. Lacking the freshness of Andrew Bujalski’s (who stars here in his usual king-of-the-losers function) brilliant ‘Mutual Appreciation’ and the rueful charm of the Duplass brother’s ‘The Puffy Chair’, this sophomoric, awkward and only occasionally witty film follows indecisive TV producer Hannah (Gerwig) and her myriad sexual adventures in the geek-o-sphere. In the end, it comes across more like a self-conscious attempt to eek out a new wave in US filmmaking than an emotionally involving and pithy drama.
