Movie review

From Time Out London

Joby Harold’s slick but silly medical thriller fails to exploit its attention-grabbing gimmick, ‘anaesthetic awareness’ – although sedated, rich kid Clay (Hayden Christensen) remains conscious during heart-transplant surgery. As surgeons cut through his sternum with an electric saw, and prise open his ribs to reveal his defective heart, he hears them plotting to kill him and steal his fortune.

Why did Clay suspect nothing when, seconds after his spontaneous marriage to the beautiful Sam (Jessica Alba), the hospital phoned with news of a  replacement heart? Perhaps he was preoccupied with the reaction of his over-protective mother, Lilith (Lena Olin), to his secret nuptials. Sam and Lilith also clash over the mother’s attempts to replace Clay’s surgeon friend, Dr Jack Harper (Terrence Howard), with her own man.

Unfortunately, it’s hard to tell the difference between Christensen’s conscious and anaesthetised states, even when Clay’s ‘out of body’ self starts padding about in his hospital pyjamas, his monotonous voice-over commenting on the unfolding drama. The medical madness spirals off the chart, the credibility factor flat-lines, and the laughing gas kicks in.

Posted on Apr 21 2008 14:18 I really enjoyed it an was pleasantly surprised!
It had a clever intermingling story line, though it did drag on a little. It was a shame you never find out what he does when he wakes. I think there should be a sequel...awake again

Posted on Apr 17 2008 13:34 Sorry people, but anyone who found this story the least bit entertaining must have watched it while "awake" through their own labotomy! The film simply doesnt make any sense, least of all the misleading facts and figures surrounding AA, having ZERO to do with the film. I keep reading comments with the phrase, "suspension of disbelief", but I honestly dont think that most people actually knows what this means. It is not enough to just accept what is happening because you have suspended your disbelief, you must believe that it does happen in the world the film is set in, be it futuristic, cartoon, comedy, whatever.
Up until the operation everything seemed ok (albeit that their are more than enough clues to figure out what is who), but after that it goes totally off the rails trying to keep a weak premise and plot together. This leads to characters suddenly behaving inexplicably or just plain stupid, with situations and reveals that are unrealistic.

Posted on Apr 14 2008 14:50 KEEPS YOU AWAKE -DEFINITELY
i dont know about the critics and the reviewers here but i am a neurologist by profession too and i found liitle to criticise in this rather chilling and horrific tale of medical corrupton ,lets not forget all the scandals related to organ sale from poor to rich patients in the thirld world which have made surgery an immoral morass,
i also rather enjoyed the mother -son relationship between the brilliant lena olin as mrs.bersford and christian as her rich son, who is targeted by some scheming medics headed by his wife -fiancee -jessica alba in a better than usual performance,
haydensen is quite good in a brooding ,cool way and is as good or better then gosling -he portrays this one better then jumper,
yes he is the only cardiac cripple in the universe who has a 6 pack, but it is hollywood -lena olin also carries a LOUIS VUITTON handbag to impress us she is a chic rich american woman -it is conspicuous in a few frames and this is hollywood product placemet in the most hilarious mode ,like the french designer luggage in DARJEELING LIMITED,well the ending has a great twist and it might look bizarre but truth is stranger than fiction or so they say,
by the way it is good cinema as the audience i watched it with were totally affected and i over heard some people say -i will never ever have surgery .
this by itself is evidence of the movie delivering its message as a neat thriller with a glossy package -and if you want to find why they said so -watch this clever little medical caper about organs and maternal sacrifices
i only wish the movie had not transformed into a mother son spirit case conference over the final reels -which was rather cheesy -other than that i cant understand neither comprehend some reviewers renal colic or heartache over this entertaining thriller .

Posted on Apr 14 2008 09:22 I don't know why people think this film wasn't that good, i didn't think it was brilliant but it was definately worth watching. I was a bit disappointed with the ending but enjoyed the storyline as well as the characters. I would recommend it but may be wait for it to come out on DVD.

Posted on Apr 11 2008 13:09 To be honest I thought it was ridiculous and really wound me up because of the many inaccuracies of having a transplant and being on the transplant list. They could've at least done a bit of research?! the concept could've been good though and its a shame it was a bit far fetched and weak plot line.
By the way, to get proper info on transplants go to www.uktransplant.co.uk. Have you signed up yet?

Posted on Apr 09 2008 22:32 Sorry, forgot my one star. I'd also add the simple plot was so easy to see through you'd have to be retarded not to figure the whole film out after 15 mins or so.......

Posted on Apr 09 2008 22:16 I have to be honest, I thought it was really awful. It was a weak plot, seemed long and boring for only 85 mins and had weak characters. I think 2 stars is generous. I'd give it one.
