PS I Love You (2007)
Director: Richard LaGravenese
Movie review
From Time Out London
‘PS I Love You’ opens with a row between husband and wife Holly (Hilary Swank) and Gerry (Gerald Butler) that is so phoney it’s embarrassing to watch. What’s intended is a screwball clash, the happy-go-lucky Irishman and the uptight New Yorker. But there’s not so much as a spark between these two, and only the knowledge that he’s about to be killed off by a brain tumour is inducement to keep watching. And yet, even after death, we are not rid of the glint-eyed Gerry, as amid clumsy flashbacks of their relationship, Swank begins to receive letters from beyond the grave. Organised during his illness, they are a predictable hash of life-affirming folksy blarney. The first arrives on her thirtieth birthday and for a year she is ordered around by her dead husband: buy a dress, wait for a sign, it’ll all fit into place. Lifting this all just above quite woeful sentimentality is Lisa Kudrow and Gina Gershon as Swank’s terrifically caustic friends. But not even they can make good of this surprisingly heartless film.Author: Cath Clarke

- Posted on Jul 31 2008 23:43 I am totally with the one star rating, the film was complete and utter tosh. If the director/scriptwriter had maybe read the book or even consulted Cecilia Ahern first then it might have been as good as the book. So much potential for a brilliant film but compltely missed the point of the book

- Posted on Jun 01 2008 22:02 I read the book which was absolutely excellent, loved it from start to end. Couldn't wait to watch the movie but how disappointing that was, I expected so much more from the movie. I wish I had the money to pay someone to make it all over again, properly, the full version! :-(

- Posted on May 18 2008 10:17 Though this was a really touching film, really genuine and a good story line but personally i prefer the book, i read it before i saw the film and thought it had a lot more too it, the film was a shorter version with big chunks missed out.

- Posted on Mar 18 2008 15:35 This is a beautiful film I laughed and cryed and it made me feel good which is what films should be about. The time out critic should not look so deeply and seriously films are meant to make you laugh, cry, gasp, be afraid and take a trip away from reality now and again for fun!!

- Posted on Feb 24 2008 22:35 I personally loved this film.. but im a big moosh at heart. Although the film I found had little to do with the book it was an amazing stand alone movie! Screw the critics anything that fills me with as much emotion as the film and book did she be greatly heralded. Spectacular. A must see.
