Okay, Hong Kong crime flick fanboys, can you really tell your Tsui Hark from your Ringo Lam from your Johnnie To? That’s the challenge in this cinematic game of pass-the-parcel, where a single storyline traces recrimination between thieves with a corrupt cop on their tail, but each half-hour is shot by a different director without any indication whose segment is which.In the event, aficionados will peg that Hark’s staccato rhythms make a complex set-up even more opaque, Lam’s surprisingly restrained mid-section restores an even keel (though there’s a bit of hairy stunt-driving too) and To’s climactic showdown blends wry humour and poised compositions, while lagging short of his best work. Little of it however, is genuinely striking enough to suggest a welcome reception beyond the already converted.
