It's fascinating to contrast this adaptation of journalist Simon Carr's bestselling memoir of his life as a bereaved single dad with Michael Winterbottom's recent 'Genova', which covered similar themes of loss, loyalty and male inadequacy. Owen is remarkably assured in the central role, but the film as a whole, and Hicks's direction in particular, doesn't do him justice: where Winterbottom opted for a remote, coldly realistic view of the grieving process, Hicks's tendency is to lunge straight for the heartstrings, leaving the film feeling at times genuinely inspirational, at others grossly manipulative.Author: Tom Huddleston
