Remember Me (2010)
Director: Allen Coulter
Movie review
From Time Out London
This year’s romantic heartthrob, R-Patz – ‘Twilight’ star Robert Pattinson to those non-fanatics among you – has an executive-producer credit attached to this unobjectionable but slightly arch and sentimentalised 2001-set New York romantic drama. This may suggest an effort on his part to add thespian respect and some rebellious street-cred to his image. If so, he might have chosen a more subtle director than Allen Coulter (‘Hollywoodland’, TV’s ‘Nurse Jackie’, ‘The Sopranos’ etc) and a better script than this clichéd, strangely humourless effort by newcomer Will Fetters.Nevertheless, the all-important romantic mechanics work well enough. The movie’s meet-cute occurs at the NYU canteen where conflicted rich kid Tyler (Pattinson) dare-dates overprotected, lone-parented Ally (petite star Emilie de Ravin from ‘Lost’) on the prompting of Tyler’s standard-issue flatmate and gooseberry, Aidan (Tate Ellington). Fate, family loss, father obsession and too much booze have brought them together: Ally’s cop dad (Chris Cooper, wasted) had previously banged up Tyler for a back-street brawl, which explains the cool-looking bruises the nice but nihilistic 21 year old sports throughout the movie – as well as the angry dad’s embargo and the curtailment of their brief idyll as the calendar turns fatefully towards September…
It’s a movie that craves much indulgence: Pattinson, playing handsome, mixed-up and misunderstood, is watchable enough but he ain’t no Olivier; while de Ravin bears her straitjacket role of ‘pretty, sweet and wise’ with good grace. But, be warned, if you’re vulnerable to outrageous, cringe-inducing implausibilities – not least the ludicrous stand-up row between Tyler and his father in the latter’s Twin Towers boardroom – you’d best give this one a miss.

- Posted on Nov 28 2011 09:56 This was, like, the best, like film EVER!!?!? Like totally blown away by the steely brooding RP, I'm totally gonna take up smoking now coz he just looked so, like totally COOL... and wow, I totally loved the irony that he could have get anything from his rich daddy except love... that was so cool and totally original... but he was so cool and moody, he just smoked and turned his back on it.... and this, like, didn't remind me of a like totally brillinat modern version of Catcher in the rye in the SLIGHTEST! Wow.

- Posted on Nov 19 2010 03:29 Surprisingly true to life, very moving and terribly sad film. Superbly well acted, all the characters are believable to the point of ache. One of the movies you’re unlikely to forget. However sad the ending may be, this is one of few pictures telling of real problems and real people. Has a lot of memorable ‘one liners’ worth writing down and memorising. Touching and extremely well made.

- Posted on Nov 12 2010 21:55 Never seen Pattinson before and thought that this would be a silly teen angst movie. In fact I was quite amazed by it and could not really say why as it was a combination of actors, story and direction which pulled off an unexpectedly good film. I don't know whether the 9/11 ending was the best option but sadly a cross section of people were involved.

- Posted on Jul 28 2010 13:12 Long and turgid. Good acting from Pattison could not save this miserable tale. Even when I thought I was getting involved some preposterous scenes (classroom and boardroom) served to remind me that this was aimed squarely at teen mentality.

so my evaluation is that I loved the movie, I thought for the story they were trying to tell it was a bit long and drawn out, the driving plot in the movie was wanting, though the heart warming moments kept it afloat, it was a sweet showing of a relationship being built rather than the typical love at first sights of the romantic comedies.
As for the acting, Emilie de Ravin does not get enough credit for this movie she was touching and sweet and tried her damn est to make her "Mary-Sue" character have depth, but there is only so much a girl can do with a script, I am as of yet undecided about Robert Patterson , At times he impressed me, at other times all I could think was BROODY BROODY BROODY perhaps he should move away from tortured souls for a while and give the happy side of his acting muscles a stretch. I think the boy has potential and it would be a shame for him to disappear with Twilight Hype. The true underdog of the movie of course is Ruby Jerins who is hardly ever commented on. Stunning performance by one so young, and gave a heart wrenching performance as the bullied little sister.
What upsets most people of course is the ending, I was very young when it happened and was safe thousands of miles away, so I gave the emotional response the director was looking for
However for someone who is old enough to not just remember but to comprehend what was happening I can see how this must have been a complete insult and smack in the face, the subject matter could have been dealt with with a little more tact - dropping hints along the way what was to come I think would have given it the Titanic effect it was going for,
and if it was shock that they wanted, then a car crash would have sufficed, and the same message would have been revised with out offended the memory of hundreds of people.
Overall I think it was an inexperienced script that killed the movie, while there were many interesting, heartfelt moments the story was inconsistent and dropped in many places.
And yes people, I did cry at the end =) - Report as inappropriate

Yes everybody has their own opinion,
but i personally think that "piggyback on a national tragedy" is wrong.
This film maybe has a teenage "heart-throb" in it but it also gives out a message to everybody "live life to the full because you never know what could happen"
I saw it yesterday (15/04/10), and as soon as i saw "September 11th 2001" on that chalkboard the tears began to run.
I'm not from the US but i felt so much for the people that lost there family members in this tragedy.
This film just gives you just a little of what a family grieved that day and i personally think this film made it.
It will be in my DVD collection because this film taught me a lesson in life.

- Posted on Apr 14 2010 13:47 Garbage, if you are over the age of twelve and have one brain cell or more then avoid like the black death. Script is laughable when existent and the acting cardboard, all the 'feelings' and 'emotions' are incredibly forced with no real character development. The whole thing just seems like the writers have seen teen films and borrowed lines and asked the actors to be moody and intense, I actually wanted to die when watching this. Seriously do not bother.

- Posted on Apr 09 2010 22:19 Went with my daughter and was pleasantly surprised at the various sub-plots running about family life, divorce, death and reconciliation. My daughter was gasping at R-Patz but then she's at that age. The less you know in advance about the ending the better. Highlight for my daughter was trailer for Eclipse, she was in spasms after Lautner shot.

- Posted on Apr 09 2010 01:54 I went to see this, not particularly being a fan of Robert P, and came away quite moved by the content. The trailer does not capture the mood of this movie, it's not about a romance it's about relationships and the reviewer/critic really needs to find a new job! A film well worth seeing, a shock beginning and shockingly sad ending, very well cast.

- Posted on Apr 08 2010 15:17 Go see this film, make your own mind up. It's different from everything out there. Didn't expect the critics to love it, undeservedly Pattinson brings with him the anti-Twilight backlash. Nothing should take anything away from what I thought was a really good story and a triumph for the entire cast & crew.
