Movie review

From Time Out London

Like 2004’s ‘Closer’, ‘Last Night’ takes a steely look at the lives, loves and indiscretions of a group of well-bred but insular city folk. But that film had a script by Patrick Marber and a cast of talented thespians. ‘Last Night’ is written and directed by the writer of best-forgotten Adrien Brody vehicle ‘The Jacket’, and stars Sam Worthington and Keira Knightley, both eager to prove their acting chops with a spot of ‘serious’ drama. Big mistake.

Worthington and Knightley play Michael and Joanna, upscale expats in New York whose marriage begins to crumble over the course of one 24-hour separation. He’s got the hots for a co-worker (Eva Mendes), she receives a visit from an old flame (the insufferably smug Guillaume Canet). But will either of them succumb to temptation? And why should we possibly care? ‘Last Night’ is an empty exercise in sheer self-regard, a tedious, lifeless trawl through the secret lives of the rich and beautiful. Even the dog looks bored to tears.

Posted on Jun 08 2011 19:10 Im not sure if it was the fault of the script or the actors but there was no spark between worthington and mendes which rendered their whole storyline pretty redundant. I loved the other couple's storyline however and knightley looks stunningly beautiful throughout. Go see if you liked knightly in pride and prejudice or are a romantic at heart

Posted on Jun 07 2011 09:33 For once I agree with TimeOut's reviewer about this tiresome waste of time. Kiera Knightly's status as a Hollywood A-Lister probably saved this movie from going straight to DVD which quite frankly all it deserves.. Tiresome mundane dialogue with unlikeable characters. The actors try their best to make a bland script into something but in the end its just zzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzzz.
