Tangled (2010)
Director: Nathan Greno, Byron Howard
Movie review
From Time Out London
The title hints at where this 3D Disney adaptation of the Rapunzel story is heading. Referring not just to our heroine’s hairdo but to her complex personal life, it nods at the breezy, flippant, tween-friendly tone the film adopts. Erstwhile popstrel Mandy Moore voices Rapunzel, whose lonely existence imprisoned in a tall tower with only a cheeky chameleon for company is enlivened when she meets brash outlaw Flynn Rider (Zachary Levi), and sets out to discover her true identity. Taking its cue from the likes of ‘Shrek’ and ‘Enchanted’, ‘Tangled’ tries to keep kids entertained while tipping ironic winks to their parents, meaning it veers wildly between being charmingly off-kilter and annoyingly glib. With two such bland heroes, it’s good that plenty of attention is paid to the supporting characters, notably old-school witchy villain Mother Gothel and a bad tempered but loveable horse. The result is brisk, witty and entertaining, but far from classic Disney.Author: Tom Huddleston

- Posted on Aug 26 2011 16:53 Tangled is without a doubt one of the best computer animated movies that Disney has ever done. I usually don't like their computer animated movies as they are very boring and dull but this one just blew me away. Expect romance, drama, a bit of a tearjearker, adventure and comedy TANGLED IS STUPENDOUS>3. MUST SEE.

- Posted on Feb 28 2011 10:17 Went to see this with our two boys (3 and 5). Wasn't expecting too much but this film was really a great watch. I usually cringe through Disney music but the songs were good and not long overdone numbers like in some movies. Loved the 3D, especially the lantern sequence which had our 5 year old reaching out and convinced he could feel the lanterns. Definitely highly recommended - PS the horse steals every scene he's in

I have to confess that I had not intended to watch Tangled, the adverts made it look rather blah. Plus, the title? Really? Anyway, following the flop that was Princess and the Frog, Disney again tries to take a modern twist on the princess fairy tale they did so well in the 20th Century. Beauty and the Beast, Sleeping Beauty, Aladdin.. These films will be passed down from generation to generation? Tangled? I doubt anyone will remember it.
My distinct feeling about the film was simply that it felt like they were trying too hard, trying to keep up with the times as opposed to just going with what they do best.
Tangled has a certain Shrek quality to it, which makes it funny, even hilarious at times, and the themes are well thought through. The CGI animation did not blow me way I have to admit, the faces look too Barbie like.
But I have to admit that the film is really good (I know it doesn't look it) but it is. So go check it out, and see what you think. :) - Report as inappropriate

- Posted on Feb 03 2011 01:02 I’m surprised the story of Rapunzel wasn’t animated by Disney decades ago. Things being what they are, the story’s told in glorious 3d. The only trouble is, 3d hasn’t yet been perfected, and I nearly went crossed eyed at one point during Tangled. The story here’s well known, so adding another dimension to it (3d?) probably seemed a good idea. However, when you think of the fantastic job Disney did in 1937 with Snow White and limited animation tools, I don’t think the quality of Rapunzel’s done Disney any favours – not once did I gasp at the animation, despite there being considerable advancements in the past 70 years. Think of the quality of Bambi (1942), and the quality of Rapunzel becomes all the more questionable. And the story is seriously long – particularly as it’s intended for kids – some of it's just not interesting, and I found myself daydreaming - 30 minutes could easily have fallen to the cutting room floor. However, some of the adult humour’s very good – the overbearing-emotionally-blackmailing “mother”, and the Marcel Marceau scene about 2/3rd of the way through were particularly funny. But like I say, a bit too long, and the quality’s questionable. For my money, “Despicable Me” has to be one of this past year’s best animations. There were ten of us in a cinema intended for several hundred. Two stars.

All in all just a bit disappointed by the film. Seen it tonight and the only laughs seemed to come from very young children. It hits most of the cliches so depressingly common in modern Disney animations. Why do they have to sing all the time!
Mandy Moore's voice gets grating after a while and the film is so clearly aimed at the American children's market with no doubt lots of merchandise available. The most worrying thing about the night was the "new" Winnie the Pooh trailer from Disney. It the same people were involved in that as this film be afraid, be very afraid. - Report as inappropriate

- Posted on Jan 29 2011 19:32 Loved it. The finest animation since HOW TO TRAIN YOUR DRAGON, If you hate 3D and insist it doesn't work check out the ASTOUNDING lantern scene. Bold, beautiful and totally charming....don't miss. 8/10
