Anuvahood (2011)
Director: Adam Deacon
Synopsis
A coming-of-age tale as one hapless street kid tries to become a gangster.
Movie review
From Time Out London
This ripe, rowdy satire on urban yoof culture is the swaggering and assured debut of its supremely talented writer-director-star Adam Deacon. Coming across like a hopped-up, London-set riff on Spike Lee’s ‘Do the Right Thing’ (minus that film’s rich political overtones), ‘Anuvahood’ dismantles a pantheon of street stereotypes with acid one-liners and energy levels that are off the chart. Deacon plays K, a vain MC whose lack of success leads him to try his luck as a drug dealer. When his money and gear are pinched by vainer, even more deluded lisping meathead Tyrone (Richie Campbell), K must show his community and family what he’s worth. It’s a bit juvenile and some of the racial and sexual stereotypes are spiteful, but it’s so funny, sweet and pacy that you really won’t care.Author: David Jenkins

Terrible film.
I liked Adulthood/Kidulthood/Shank, and wanted this to be good.
It really wasn't, it was mediocre, not funny, weak annoying characters and I honestly couldn't have cared less if the cinema had stopped working halfway through. - Report as inappropriate

- Posted on Apr 09 2011 02:53 I enjoyed this film because it was pretty light. The reason why I enjoyed it is because, as difficult it is to say, it's true to life. I've witnessed aspects of this from time to time, and my boyfriend who lives in a similar area to that in the film can relate 100%. It's the way life is. It can be dark and dangerous, and it can also be comical (even in crude ways). It's not about being intelligent or making you think, it's just an observation. And unfortunately the stereotypes are pretty much true in the circumstances. Also, people aren't going to go out and commit crimes after seeing this film, it's up to them to have the intelligence to differentiate reality from films. Besides I enjoyed it for what it is, Just because it's silly, doesn't mean it's unrealistic. If you're going to see the film I would suggest to go with an open mind and to not take it seriously.

I too thought that the film only intensified stereo typical vies of young people and only encouraged people to inflict violence on others for pointless reasons.
Shame on you Adam for not directing a film that could at least, temporarily change at least 1 persons view. - Report as inappropriate

- Posted on Mar 28 2011 21:44 Utter dross. Let's all scream and shout and ham it up as much as possible to cover for the gaping holes in the script and the lazy plot. Cost me 30 quid all told and I want my money back!! Films this dire should come with a 'waste of money' warning. I thought it was gonna be witty. I wanted to see a decent British film, but it was total dross. Where was the comedy? Where was the ANYTHING?? It didn't introduce characters properly, didn't build them up, didn't make you empathise with them... What was Jaime Winstone's role? The head baddy wasn't even comically bad, he was just not believable. Lazy rubbish that insults the filmgoer and robs them of their cash. The only bit that I actually enjoyed was seeing Aisleyne Horgan-whatserface getting punched. She deserves it just for the annoying Jafaican accent she put on in BB a few years back. One star for that. But zero for everything else. Wait for the DVD to rent if you want to waste 90 minutes of your life - at least it'll only be wasting about 3 quid.

I thought this film was hilarious.
It wasn't glorifying gangs or street crime and it was great to see a good British film. - Report as inappropriate

- Posted on Mar 23 2011 23:35 I Fraser. I just saw your comment and can't believe how ignorant you seem to be. As an educated young person I doubt that you are as educated as you seem to believe you are. I am not disputing that the education system has failed those who are in gangs but this film is anti gang. It is, in a humorous way, trying to deter people from gangs by showing them that it is better to just be themselves, as one character constantly reminds K. I'm surprised that somebody as educated as yourself fails to recognise this.Fair enough its not your kind of movie, I don't like gory movies like saw but don't call those who watch them sadists. I accept that people have different tastes and leave it at that. Oh and I don't smoke, don't drink and the others in the cinema didn't seem the type, to do so, either.

- Posted on Mar 23 2011 23:16 Loved this film. I expected it to be crap but it surpassed my expectations. It is in no way racially or sexually spiteful by the way. It exaggerates the way that people act in everyday life and is hilarious. Its nice to see something funny and light hearted in these tough time. Deacon has some talent and this film had me laughing all the way through. I highly recommend you go see it.

- Posted on Mar 23 2011 20:18 Lively if sometimes OTT comedy. For the record, I Fraser, I`m an educated non-spliff smoker in my mid-40s, so I`m afraid I don`t fit your insultingly pompous stereotype of who this film will appeal to.

- Posted on Mar 22 2011 06:28 Trouble is, we're conditioned to think that criminal or street comedy = sharp, snappy, well-observed one-liners a la Guy Ritchie or Quentin T. The reality is that street gangs, just like criminal gangs, are actually full of education system failures, whose sense of humour, if they have one, is little more than crude slapstick, stereotyping or bullying. In that sense, this film is depressingly true-to-life, and will appeal to the very people it portrays, rather than the more intelligent film-goer. Put bluntly, if you're actually capable of reviewing this film, you won't like it. If you're watching it between spliffs and prior to an evening of underage boozing and ASB, you'll probably find it a scream. But then, you'll probably never read these reviews anyway.

- Posted on Mar 21 2011 19:50 David Jenkins, three stars, are you serious? 'It’s a bit juvenile and some of the racial and sexual stereotypes are spiteful, but it’s so funny, sweet and pacy that you really won’t care. ' I thought it was going to be a clever parody of urban films, like Ali G was, but it just sticks to old stereotypes without any fresh ideas, no parody, no twist, no plot! It wasn't 'sweet' or 'funny' it was a waste of time and money. The only good thing is the UK film industry will probably turn its back on Deacon so we don't have to watch any of his films again!
