Synopsis

The fifth entry into this road-racing franchise juggernaut sees Dwayne 'The Rock' Johnson joins Vin Diesel for more shunts, scrapes and prangs in souped-up muscle cars.

Movie review

From Time Out London

It’s ten years since Vin Diesel and Paul Walker got behind the wheel of this franchise and they’re probably as surprised as anyone it’s still going. After busting out of a prison van, global car thief Dom (Diesel) hatches a plan to rob Rio’s biggest drug baron of his cash. Meanwhile his sister Mia (Jordana Brewster) has a little boy/girl racer on the way thanks to cop-turned-robber Brian (Walker). To get the stash, they’re going to need fast cars and a team of experts: cue characters from past films, introduced in the style of ‘Ocean’s Eleven’.

The heist plot is lightly enjoyable, even if the finer details get muddied in a puff of exhaust smoke. There’s an amusing love-hate bromance between Diesel and newcomer to the series Dwayne Johnson, who sports a beard in case slower viewers should get confused. Overlong but slick, this still gets away with simplistic dialogue and characters, perhaps because it doesn’t take itself too seriously. And judging by the post-credits scene, there’s yet more fast and furious tomfoolery to come.

Posted on Jun 03 2011 13:30 this is a wicked film but i think in my own opinion that the director made a mistake making the rock a cop intead of him and vin diesel are working alongside one another they could be like double trouble

Posted on May 16 2011 16:13 this fifth movie is a back to basics kick ass ride with none of the 'glitz & lights' of the street racers. In my opinion this is exactly what f&f5 needed to keep the movie fans coming back. Apart from can you smell what the Rock is cookin cheesy lines its up there with the best-the 1st f&f

Posted on May 06 2011 16:47 abrown - it's a bit rich castigating the filmmakers for holding out for a 'payday' when you watched the movie (presumably for free) online, no?

Posted on May 05 2011 19:39 As a fan of the F&F series i did find this somewhat lacking!I did watch this online in poor quality but still, what happerned to racing cars? it was like a mixture of italian job and oceans 11/12.Not sure a 6th film is such a good idea, think they are just dragging it out for a payday now.

Posted on May 05 2011 16:44 Not seen one of these before and, though Id give it 6/10 for plentiful, brilliantly staged car carnage, dont think i'll be seeing another. Got the (Tokyo) drift and one outing will do fine.

Posted on May 01 2011 13:32 Fast n furious is not a film to stimulate the mind, but for me this film was great, lots of action and a great fight between vin diesel vs the rock fight. For the people who rate this film poorly don't think into things too much, it's not inception!

Posted on Apr 28 2011 08:34 I dragged my girlfriend to see this at the weekend. Her take on it - a terrible film. My take on it - also pretty terrible. Definitely the weakest of the F+F films. The cars take a back seat (pun intended) in this installment. The film works more as a very poor man's Ocean's 11 than a racing film. Characters spend most of the film planning a robbery - then carry out said robbery using a completely different plan. WTF?! Best bit in the whole film was the ruck between Diesel and The Rock. Worth the price of admission although I was disappointed The Rock did not Rock Bottom anyone.

Posted on Apr 28 2011 00:10 Mediocre fast-car-heist where muscle tone is more important than acting ability. From about 30 minutes in I found myself yawning, though in places the action picked up and was good. However, the story’s pretty predictable and audience mobile phones were coming out and being checked for messages – always a sign a movie’s getting a bit slow. The rookie female cop with only 6 months’ experience was laughable – “count me in – I’m motivated”. Of a not very large audience, 4 or 5 people left after about an hour. Consider taking motion sickness tablets before you see this one – they might stop you honking at some of the cheesy dialogue. Not very inspiring cinematography - and in places very shakey. Definitely 2 stars.
