The Five-Year Engagement (2012)
Director: Nicholas Stoller
Synopsis
Just when you think producer Judd Apatow and his band of merry comics can’t find another unexplored wrinkle in the fabric of the modern relationship, here comes ‘The Five-Year Engagement’ which, like ‘The 40-Year-Old Virgin’ and ‘Knocked Up’ before it, does pretty much what it say on the tin. ‘Forgetting Sarah Marshall’ and ‘The Muppets’ scribes Nicholas Stoller and Jason Segel reteam for this knockabout ‘comedy of misery’, in which Segel plays Tom, whose relationship with fiance Victoria (Emily Blunt) goes through a series of changes over their epic engagement period. Rhys Ifans aside, the supporting cast is largely comprised of unknowns (one of whom is called Clement von Franckenstein, weird fact fans), while Stoller himself is back in the director’s chair he occupied for ‘Sarah Marshall’ and ‘Get Him to the Greek’.
