Movie review

From Time Out London

In the 1990s the Taliban jailed Afghan barbers for offering the ‘Titanic’, a haircut inspired by Leonardo DiCaprio’s in James Cameron’s 1997 epic. What a thrill it is to see DiCaprio in this souped-up re-release, a beautiful boy again (these days he looks like a puggish bit player in a ’30s mob movie). ‘Titanic’ has fared better than his looks, shining up like a new penny in 3D in time for the centenary of the disaster. Yes it’s backside-achingly long with a level of melodrama to make ‘Gone with the Wind’ blush, but distance drifts a puffy cloud of nostalgia over its faults.

We know the story ends badly but Cameron still sweeps us up in the romance between Kate Winslet’s rebellious posh girl and DiCaprio’s steerage kid. The 3D is dazzling, conveying the vastness of the ship in a way that will hit vertigo sufferers in the bladder. So too will Celine Dion’s theme song, which hasn’t improved with age.

Posted on Apr 17 2012 20:24 Nicely non intrusive 3D, mass appeal (about 6 12 ish year old's and guardian NOISILY entered during Fox fanfare, 60 sec later, not a peep for remaining 194 min, bar booby errrrr, titters!) and enjoyed it more than in 1998 (1st and only viewing) but simply too long...a 150 min treatment would have me exclaiming "Excellent!" but as it is, very good. Do I want to see it again soon? no. Next decade? yes. If that sounds like a criticism, it ain't. It's an "event" film that demands the big screen...nothing less. 7+/10

Posted on Apr 15 2012 20:08 Thought it fitting to see the film on the centenary and glad I did.The 3d effects were fantastic, the film has aged very well and it blew me away as it did the first time. Winslett and Di Caprio looked so beautiful and cherubic. An amazing movie, just wish James Cameron would donate all funds raised to the relatives of the 1500 poor souls who perished that night and not line his pockets once again, he hardly needs to!

Posted on Apr 11 2012 02:42 DEAR SIR OR MADAM: It is brilliant. But the real star of this movie, I feel, would be the SPECIAL EFFECTS!!!
And Kate Winslett SHOULD have won the Best Actress Oscar. ANY actor could play the part Leonard Thing played. And he was considered dishy in 1997. Even I am better looking and I'm a fat 64-year-old male.
    REGARDS, DES, WED-APR-11-2012.

Posted on Apr 08 2012 16:09 The 3D is a bit disorientating and while the film looks all very bright; brand new and spectacular on a big screen it is still a bore to me.
It is still probably half an hour too long for my taste and it hits most of the cliches in a plot that has more holes than a Swiss cheese.
For me 3 stars. Two for the plot but an extra one for the overall spectacle.

Posted on Apr 08 2012 09:04 Didn't see it first time round at the cinema, but have seen it a few times on TV. I'm glad I decided to go - it is a classic movie spectacular (I went to a Vue, definitely the right place with their big screens) and the 3D is done well and not too over-engineered. Leo and Kate must be overjoyed that their youthful beauty is captured forever.

Posted on Apr 04 2012 11:00 Is there any possibility of actually watching the 3D version before commenting folks? As far as you know, the 3D may be poor and....errrr, sink it! (saw extended scenes at the O2 last summer in 3D...think you will be happy, but still....!)

Posted on Mar 29 2012 00:52 I absolutely adore this comic.Yes, the lulls in beetwen are long, but I for one have no issues with them. The spaces beetwen pages makes them seem almost like a gift, like something special that should be savored, and that's what this comic is.I studied the way you color and line your pages, as well as how you use facial expressions, and I have to say, it's helped me a great deal in my own artwork. The almost casual grace some of the characters seem to have is amazing, and how you translate each personality through their body language is just astounding.Thankyou so much for producing this wonderful work of art, and I will always check back for updates until the day it reaches it end. I will never leave The Meek. It is far too good.I appreciate all the work you do, dear. I hope you feel better soon, and that all your health problems will clear up without too much trouble.Get well!-Vee

Posted on Feb 26 2012 01:36 Being a titanic fan since "A Night to Remember" when I was a child, Cameron's was rge first film to show the destuction of Titanic as she sank. I can't wait to see the 3D version to reexperiance these details. I was awed the first time around and many times since, hopefully this time too!
