After 35 years lost in the cosmos, the spaceship 'Event Horizon' re-establishes contact. A team of crack astronauts, led by Fishburne and accompanied by scientist Neill, is sent from Earth to salvage the vessel and pick up survivors. When they arrive, they get more than they bargained for. For all its big budget effects and scenery, Brit director Anderson's third feature - after Shopping and Mortal Kombat - is less sci-fi spectacular than old fashioned ghost-cum-horror yarn, set 56 days away from Earth. Walls drip blood and shapeless evil hovers. Horror piles on horror without much intervening suspense. Even the fine supporting cast (Pertwee, Richardson and Quinlan) fails to raise the ghost of a smile to ease the tension. But, despite its shortcomings, this is never dull. The movie avoids Alien space monster clichés brilliantly and the soundtrack contains more of the 'Boo!' effects than I've heard since Halloween.
