Guess Who's Coming To Dinner

One can hardly complain about the performances when Tracy and Hepburn combine as the leads, but Kramer's well-meaning comedy-drama about racism - a liberal couple suffer a few doubts when their daughter brings home the black she intends to marry - is a leaden and stilted affair, wrecked by the cautious move of making the groom-to-be singularly good-looking, respectable (he's a doctor) and well-to-do. A wishy-washy, sanctimonious plea for tolerance, directed with Kramer's customary verbosity and stodginess.

An excellent movie and an excellent way to wrap up a successful carreer. Not only a plea for tolerance, but a little poke at those who CLAIM the tolerance, but will they practice it. In the black father-in-law a pointer that says that whites are not the ONLY ones with a little racism to overcome. But overcome it they will, with the "greek corus" of Tilley the housekeeper and the Father to comment on it all. Entertaining and emotional, gut wrenching heartache with a lot of tension, with a happy ending - we hope. The movie ends with the dinner party, we never know the life the new couple leads. Try it -you'll like it.
