Lasse Hallström’s latest is based on a true story – transplanted from 1930s Japan to contemporary New England – about a faithful Akita dog called Hachi. Hallström’s unfussy, effective film uses several visual techniques – dog’s eye-view black-and-white footage, sped-up time frames – to tell the often moving tale of Parker Wilson  (Richard Gere), a music professor and family man who surrenders to the charms of dog ownership. When Parker dies and his family sells up and moves away, Hachi legs it back to the railway station where his owner used to arrive home from work and keeps vigil there for almost a decade. Sensitively directed and rarely over-sentimental, this touching parable will likely ravish the emotions of dog lovers. Yet the film is as much about the emotional fallout of death as about a mutt’s loyalty and devotion. As a dog owner, I must confess to having had a large lump in the throat throughout. So call me soppy.

As portrayed in the move, the real Hatchi was taken to new homes more then once, and each time he escaped to return to his vigil. The Japanese villagers took care of Hatchi by feeding and watering him. He was NOT abused.

Three times I've tried to watch this movie and just can't. I'm reminded of a line by Charles Boyer in one of his movies. His lady friend wanted him to take her to a sad play and he said, "Life is sad enough. I don't like to pay for my tears." I agree with other reviewers who are critical of the humans in this story. There are enough true-life stories of abused, abandoned and neglected animals for me to show concern for. Watching a movie with a decade of callous people passing up the opportunity to love Hachi is not the way I want to spend 2 hrs.

Best dog movie ever!!! And here is a bonus that no one ever expected .... On May 19, 2012, there was an exact replica of the original bronze statue of Hachiko which resides at Hachi Station in Japan, unveiled at the train depot in Woonsocket, RI, where the movie was filmed. My Akita-mix Hachi and I attended and to our surprise he was invited to be part of the ribbon-cutting ceremony. He was front and center in the newspaper article photograph as "a real-life standin for Hachiko". It does not get any better than this for me and my boy. Long live Hachiko in our minds and our hearts.

Several things disturbed me about this movie, mainly that NO one (except the Richard Gere character) appeared to love dogs. Why is it that after Dr. Parker dies and Hachi keeps returning to the train station, NO one makes an earnest attempt to adopt him and help him get over his grief. Even Parker's daughter lets him leave her home and become a vagabond. Parker's WIDOW does the same thing when she encounters Hachi at the train station 10 years later. Did anyone involved in writing this screenplay even LIKE dogs? For me, this movie wasn't about the dog's loyalty to his dead friend but about the absolute ignorance and pathetic impotence of the humans who let a wonderful dog live and die in a hopeless, homeless existence. The movie had me sniffling at the end in spite of my anger at the soul-less human characters. This makes me suspect that the producers of the film came up with a plot that would appear to be sincere to invoke tears, but lacked any input from someone who truly loves animals. This film is manipulative, phony and depressing. Worst dog movie EVER. (From an animal lover with 3 dogs, 2 cats, 4 rabbits and a guinea pig.)

I have no major issues in my life and have good, healthy relationships. If someone thinks this is slow, just accept it as an opinion rather than telling them they have issues. That is so silly and mean. It is a really slow film! I fast forwarded through it and totally got the plot. Not much dialogue. Just very slow.

Great film that has a genuine message, realistic, understated characters and a heart-broken dog; you can't help but admire the dog's dedication and loyalty. it is heart-warming without being mawkish. There are no over the top heroes and baddies, and its does not rely upon CGIs for its impact. The way the bond between Gere and the pooch develops is well depicted and believeable

Rich

Those who found the film boring and were not moved by it are insensitive and missed the point. Yes, it's very sentimental, but since it is based on a true incident (though transplanted to a different locale) that moved a town to erect a bronze statue of the real dog, only the unfeeling will be unmoved by this low-key drama. Those who prefer explosions and mindless special effects can skip it.

Tony

Do not waste your money, this is the worst and most boring movie ever made, no plot, no story, no emotion - a total pointless waste of 90 minutes. I'd rather poke myself in the eye with a blunt pin.

Really loved this film..I am a big animal lover and have experienced the love and loyalty of a good dog.. this film just shows the bond between man and animal.. I think only animal lovers will get the moral and emotion behind the film nearly cried when Hachi kept going to the station.. so sad but sweet, and I have just aquired a lil 9wk old puppy and I hope she shows me loyalty and devotion like that.. and I will be one happy dog owner ;-)

A great film and well worth watching, and any one that said it was boring and repetitive must have never had the pleasure of owning a dog and never loved anything more than they love themselves.

Well to those of you that thought this film was a waste of money it's sad to say that you must of not got the point of the film. It might be that you are very heartless and your life my lack the most important thing in life which is love. This film shows you the friendship this dog and his owner built during their time together. His loyalty to that one person who didn't shut him out but took him in and took care of him. Yes it might be about a dog but this often occurs with humans people rather turn the other way then help someone. Just keep in mind that when u do this, don't expect anything in return. Loyalty and friendship is very important in our lives and if you show that much love for an animal then a human you will love even more. So to those of you that cried and enjoyed the film great you are sensitive loving human beings to those that said it was boring well then you must live a very lonely empty life... Good luck with that!!

What a beautiful movie.. I was so moved by Hachi's devotion to his owner - every day, he showed up at the railway station, to greet his master. The love they had for one another, was evident, and the dog's vigil, showed his dedication in meeting his owner, every evening.. I cried, and was so emotional, as I lost myself, in the film. Well done to all the cast, for brilliant acting. I will be going to see it again soon.

Go ahead, call me soppy as well but I loved this film. Admittedly, I like dogs very much... This film was touching and very moving. Yes the storyline is dead-simple but the whole point of this film is about simple feelings: love and trust and loyalty. Good acting by Richard Gere and Joan Allen. Even though it is a very sad film,I think the display of love and loyalty make it somehow uplifting. And yes, I did shed a few tears and had a large lump in my throat as well... . This film is based on a true story. A Japanese film telling the story of this dog has already been made in the 1980's.

Loved this film. It shows you the loyalty of the dog to it's master. If only people were as loyal to one another, the world would be a better place!!!!!! A great and moving film, and yeh so what if you see a lot of the dog waiting in the film, he is so cute! The film was showing you the comitment of the dog and he did wait for him for about ten years, so showing the dog waiting was the whole point of the move!!!!! Will buy the film on dvd and would recomend others to see it.

A lovely film about a true story of a dog's love and loyalty for his master. Some may find it boring and repetative but life is like that at times and for me this story speaks of deep love for a lost loved one whether they be human or animal and a deep loyalty that we could all learn from. Heart wrenching but very deep.

This is a good film. It is about love and dealing with death and loyalty. It offers hope and is uplifting in a way but also extremely sad. Gut-wrenching in a way.

With movies this bad, it's little wonder Richard Gere's film career's disappeared down the toilet. I was bored rigid. Consider taking a can of paint and a brush with you - that way you'll be able to watch paint dry ... it'll be more interesting than this film.

Claire wrexham

This film is brilliant, it has a really good story to it aswel, basically Richard gere finds a lost puppy and takes it in, hachi and Richard gere get really attached to eachother, hachi walks gere to the trainstation every day, and goes back to wait for jim every day at 5pm! Until one day gere doesn't arrive at the trainstation, hachi waits about 6 hours for gere until gere's daughters fiancé comes to collect him, hachi goes to the trainstation everyday for 10 years waiting to greet richard gere even though he never arrives as he is dead! It's so touching and shows you how loyal a dog is to there master even after they have passed over! Brilliant film!!!!! But very sad!
