Tautly paced and unpretentiously punchy, Beresford's heist thriller is an object lesson in mainstream narrative confidence and economy, detailing the ironic convergence of underworld, undercover and under-suspicion around a security firm vault containing $20 million. The question of who polices the police runs like a black comedy subtext through the film, but is never allowed articulation until the complex business at hand is out of the way in a generically inevitable blood-bath; while the prevalent assumption of universal corruption begins to play havoc with audience sympathies.
