What’s the point of a movie about magic? We know it’s all done with CGI, so why even bother trying to fool us? This flouncy exercise in would-be story chicanery never surmounts its own innate sense of pointlessness, but a hard-working, likeable cast make it bearable. Woody Harrelson and Jesse Eisenberg, playing mateyness and nerdy narcissism, are among a bunch of tricksters persuaded to put together a stage spectacular during which they appear to commit bank robberies and share the spoils with a gobsmacked audience. Michael Caine hovers purposefully as their wealthy benefactor, while smoothly conceited TV pundit Morgan Freeman vows to expose their methods. Meanwhile, trailing cop Mark Ruffalo exists in a permanent state of open-mouthed confusion.

There are plenty of wizard wheezes, chases and punch-ups before we learn the who, what and why of it all, by which time it’s hard to care either way since the movie never decides whether we’re rooting for the maverick illusionists or the pursuers trying to uncover their secrets. Bustling, glittery, uninvolving.

I feel people are over critiquing this film and under critiquing it as well, some of you are too analytical of a rather enjoyable film, is it the best? No, definitely not the worst!! The cast is good and the storyline is pretty good if anything I feel the twist at the end is a good one but I do feel they could have told more in this film, it feels as though they left a lot out but I guess the run time would be too long

I found everything about this film stunning and full of excitement. The all star cast played each role perfectly with a fast pace that kept the audience wondering what would happen next. It was far from boring and full of mystery and deception to the very end. This fast paced magical film did just what most of us want and that is to be entertained. The Time Out review criticizes this movie for being uninvolving which isn't even a real word. The real word for this film is just plain entertainment.

Wonderfully fine film that I under appreciated. A whole lot of everything that I found empty, but at the same time, not upset about. So, middle of the road rating.

I was disappointed we only saw an arrogant side to the four horsemen. I like the fact we don't know who we're rooting for weather it be the "maverick illusionists or the pursuers trying to uncover their secrets" which is why the ending is that little bit more special. The combination of your classic heist movie entwined with unconventional magic keeps you guessing until the end. Loved the cast! A high 3 *

This movie is entertaining, lots of room for predictions however seemingly predictable. Great ending / twist, very intriguing, kept me on my toes from beginning to end. Overall 4.3/5 Great Movie, Great cast!!

A pretty dumb movie, so easy to concoct but ultimately all rather pointless. Isn't it about time someone pensioned off MC his performance is always so unconvincing he sounds as though he's reading the lines.

2 stars for being entertaining all the way to the end. Ending was terrible. Yes its a surprise ending. But really lame... a good movie would've thrown in hints as to who the 5th horseman was. This film, it could've been anyone. Mere guesswork. Most of the ideas have been seen before, nothing original here. Definitely entertaining, I enjoyed the cast, but the ending ruined it...

Great cast, much love for dave franco! However it was bigged up quite a lot in the adverts so as good as it was I was kind of expecting a tiny bit more, there were some bits where i wasn't really listening. There's a lot to the story. I loved the twist at the end. It was definitely an original film and I think it is a film worth watching and I would recommend it so that you can develop your own opinion. 3 Stars.

What a doofus! I never guessed who the mastermind behind the Four Hoursemen was until it was revealed at the end of the movie. I feel like Rory McIlroy at the Open. Brain dead!

Jack Wynn

I cannot believe 3 people have given it 5 stars. Did you see the same film I saw? This is a poorly made film with some questionable casting choices and a final twist to turn your stomach. Critique gets it right saying it was filled with annoying self-satisfied characters. They were so annoying I wanted to slap them all. The only bit I really enjoyed was the car chase in the middle. Other than that it was a pile of utter nonsense.

I agree very much with the comment below that says, and I quote: "to make the audience enjoy things that would never happen on real life, as if they were real". This is a very well said frase. The argument is very good, because movies wouldn't be enjoyable if the audience saw it as just a production. For example, Harry Potter would be a horrible movie if the audience considered that all the magic is just special effects and the magical world was made up. The reason that I, for example, liked so much Harry Potter, was because it made me imagine that there was really a magical world.

The movie is very entertaining and has an very unexpected ending. I see movies about magic, as magical movies. Of course that the magic is all made with special effects, but movies are made not to be seen as something were everything is planned, They are made to be seen like if they were real. That's the real magic of a movie. You will only really like a movie, once you believe that it's real. If people saw movies as a bunch of actors pretending to do something, movies would lose their own essence: to make the audience enjoy things that would never happen on real life, as if they were real.

Really enjoyed this movie. Do not be put off by the T.O. review, its a pacey enough story with very good twists and turns that keep you guessing to the very end. Go and enjoy it. 8 / 10

Giddy, fast-moving, twist-a-minute, sleight-of-hand puzzler, stuffed to the brim with annoyingly self-satisfied characters and strangely uninvolving.

Julien

Very special, new ... fresh... with a lot of nice ideas. Good cast and nice scenario. For once not a stupid action film.

This is quite a lot better than the review would make you believe. It will keep you hooked from the beginning through to the very end. I changed my mind who the "brains" behind the scenes was twice and I didn't get it until it was revealed. Worth a view. Not fabulous but certainly interesting and entertaining. A solid 3 star film.
