Call it 'The Artist' effect, but period French romantic fantasies are very much the in thing right now. And here comes the '50s-set 'Populaire', in which a young woman from a rural family (Déborah François) heads for a new town, hooks up with a dashing insurance man (popular leading man Romain Duris) and discovers a newfound talent for speed typing, which becomes an even greater asset when she enters a secretarial competition. Hyperstylised and dripping with '50s class, the film even manages a bit of 'Mad Men' antics when our heroine heads to New York for the world championships. Expect fish-out-of-water comedy, numerous classic Hollywood movie references and warm glows all round.
