It’s a distinctly frazzled Will Smith we see at the start of this teasing drama. Calling emergency services, he looks on his last legs, before we cut back to trace what brought him to this point of no return. It’s then we meet mean Will Smith, an IRS agent seemingly specialising in pursuing the disadvantaged, such as Woody Harrelson’s blind piano teacher and Rosario Dawson’s stationery designer with a heart condition. Still, a bit curious that Smith’s living in a cheap motel all the while, since intercut moments suggest a family life somewhere in the past. What can it all mean?

Actually, the film’s distributors have us sworn to secrecy, but chances are that if we did spill the beans, you wouldn’t believe us. It’s totally bonkers. Kudos though to director Gabriele Muccino (who previously helmed the rather grittier Smith entry ‘The Pursuit of Happyness’) for drip-feeding us towards the big reveal with no little style, turning out a movie that’s seductively lithe and sheeny, giving every impression of in-the-moment gravitas… rather like a superior car advert. Smith does enough here to suggest that he’s pushing at the edges of his goody-goody image, while Dawson works wonders in a role so thankless it should have its own awards category.

However, all concerned are mere pawns in thrall to a central conceit that sails beyond mere sentiment to encapsulate the surreal. It’s not what you’d call any good, but Claude Lelouch fans, say, might relish its grandiose romantic gestures in the face of all known logic.

  • MH said... If there's one thing that grinds with me it's amateur philosophers. MH its a heart thing...just expressing how I feel. Besides it is a quote from Obama Book , Dreams from my Father...so for your skills of identifying amateur philosophers, I guess you are not that bright huh? Regardless it a great movie...not that I am encouraging the means that this character has subccumb. If you look beyound that you will discover your true self. That is if you are not so wrapped up in yourself. Stop being a hater, losen up and do something special for a stranger. Pay-It-Forward.

  • I dont think ive ever watched anything as beautiful as this movie. I'm going through a turning point in my life right now, and this just sums it all up for me, this is how people should be, and this movie shows up all the dirty marks and blemishes in this world when it comes to such selfish people, ive never cried so much during a film, let alone coming home and balling my eyes out, its was so beuatiful in everyway and i wish we could all realise that if we lived life like this, the world WOULD be a better place!

This is the price and promise to humanity. The gathering clouds is sapping love towards humanity and replacing it with an entitlement to do as we please. This movie for me was a beautiful insight of what our lives should be like from the begining. It is the price and the promise of humanity. This knowledge that God calls on all of us to shape an uncertian destiny. It was a wonderful movie that showed how to touch someones life and change it for the good. It showed how to find meaning in something greater than yourself. Will Smith beautiful move. If there's one thing that grinds with me it's amateur philosophers

  • The week since I saw Seven Pounds has not changed my opinion of how good it is. Its been very interesting to see the different comments from other viewers. You either like it or you don't. In retrospect its creative approach to guilt and grief is very much in a European flavor. Yes its slow moving and there are leaps of faith but it opened my heart to values that many of us have either forgotten or places we fear to go to. I encourage people to take a box of kleenex, find a quite corner of the theatre and let this film embrace you.

  • After reading all these positive reviews I thought I'd HAVE to go and see the film again. Maybe I'd had a bad day or wasn't in the mood. I can honestly say this is a terrible film. It's contrived to the point of being utter nonsense. I strongly suspect people who think it's a good film are thick and think that they're viewing something profound and moving. Wake up and smell the coffee - it's a terrible film.

  • I saw this movie this aftewrnoon. I thought it was a beautiful movie. Very heart warming. I think that the people who have given negative reviews are people who have grown cold towards humanity. So many times in this world we are lead to believe that its all about us, we forget that our first purpose is to our neighbours. This is not the path for the faint hearted, its understanding that our patchwork heritage is a strength not a weakness...it about having effect with regard. There is nothing so satisfying to the spirt, so defining of character, then giving all os self to a difficult task. Our lives is to show not tell, if we don't do that then we have failed to live. Its a WONDERFUL film.
