Every few years, some bright spark at a Hollywood studio thinks of revisiting the classic fairytales, giving them a modern twist and making them ‘relevant’. The results are rarely pretty – anyone recall ‘Snow White: A Tale of Terror’? – but it’s hard to remember an example quite as embarrassingly misguided as ‘Snow White and the Huntsman’.

Kristen Stewart plays Snow White, the daughter of a benevolent king who’s bumped off by his maniacal man-hating wife, Ravenna (Charlize Theron), aka the Wicked Queen. Fleeing to the Dark Forest (the film is full of these obnoxious postmodern ‘look, it’s a fairytale!’ touches), Snow White makes the acquaintance of the Huntsman (Chris Hemsworth), a rough-diamond loner with a dark past and the worst Glaswegian accent since Mike Myers did Fat Bastard.

Pretty average so far. But then the dwarfs turn up, and the true horror begins. Wait, that’s not Bob Hoskins is it? And it can’t possibly be… Ray Winstone? But it is – and Toby Jones, Ian McShane, Nick Frost, Johnny Harris and Eddie Marsan, too. The cream of British acting talent has been digitally shrunken and saddled with haircuts that make them look like a midget Slade tribute band, gambolling about in a forest glade so sickeningly CG-sweet it looks like an advert for air freshener.

Unsurprisingly, it’s all downhill from there. Perhaps the filmmakers thought that having Stewart strap on a scabbard and go looking for some queenly ass to kick would make this a modern girl-power parable, but in fact the opposite is true: by placing so much focus on Theron’s preening, psychologically scarred Ravenna, the film feels deeply reactionary. The tone is wildly uneven, skipping from humourless knockabout slapstick to bizarre psychedelic whimsy to sub-‘Game of Thrones’ swordplay without ever getting close to likeable or charming. The result is witless, heartless and dull. Even the Twi-hards are going to want their money back.

Am I going nuts? I've seen a million films and this was one of the best ever. Compelling in its respectful and imaginative building on the fairy tale. The critic isn't worth the name.

I agree wholeheartedly with this review - Kristen Stewart has only one rigid facial expression, and it's a shame that she is unable to display emotion at all. There were sub-plots that were hinted at but never materialised, like any form of romance plot at all. The original fairytale was overridden by the need for yet more intense running and falling over. The script was terribly-paced and filled with continuity errors, and whoever wrote the complete gibberish that was Snow White's 'inspiring battle speech' should consider changing careers. It's a film that doesn't know what genre it's aiming for, so makes a clumsy stab at all of them - we got scary, silly, childish and over-dramatic action all in one. Visually stunning, you can tell that every penny was spent on the artistry of it, and it's a shame that the writing and acting were utterly neglected in favour of the admittedly fabulous look of the film. A first-time director and first-time writers frankly should not be at the helm of something this over-hyped and big-budgeted. The story was painfully bad and the acting only compounded the failure. A total screw up from start to finish.

The best film I've seen in a long time. That review is a load of rubbish. I think you must have watched a different film!

Don't believe the blase and rigid reviews here, This is is the best I have seen since Avatar, and I go to the cinema every week. It is beautiful, magical, and uplifting.

The plot is slack. Thus 127 minutes drags. Actors don't stay in character. Stewart as always is unemotive. Theron just about manages to hold her own. Chris Hemsworth's character (huntsman) doesn't even need to be in the story apart from it's in the title. The Dwarves are gimmicky but a welcome amusement. Art direction is great and visual effects are beautiful. Overall it's a pretty film but suffers from a poor loose script and actors not immersed in their roles, i.e. directed by a high end commercials director, (excellent at visuals, useless at actually directing actors)

I agree with the review whoelheartedly, and I'm a little surprised that there aren't more people saying so!

I can't believe that anyone can say this is a bad movie. I went to see it with a bunch of people and each and every one of us said that it was one of the best fairytale/adventure movies we'd ever seen. I am hard to impress but I put this film up with Avatar. Absolutely brilliant. Brilliant acting, amazing effects. The best I've seen in a long time :)

So boring. The director got some of the worst performances ever from good actors. People in the audience laughing at Charlize's terrible accent and over the top lines, poor woman really needs a better agent after putting her in this rubbish and the even worse Prometheus. Avoid both movies at all cost.

BEST FREAKING MOVIE EVER!!! I loved it and I don't love a lot of movies. ^^^ these people are being way to harsh. I think th did a wonderful job making the movie. And Kristine Stewart made an awesome snow white

The critics choice to give the film 1 star was bemusing to me, true it's not the best twisted fairytale ever made but it's certainly not the worst, well worth a watch, does drag on a bit made even more annoying by the facts I missed my bus by a couple of minutes. 6.5 or 7\10

oli

I fairly enjoyed the film, a bit average but worth a watch, good entairtanement for a couple of hours, Not the best twisted fairytale but not bad. 6.5 or 7\ 10

Ric

I liked it.good movie to pass the time. Kristen Stewart-SNOW WHITE??? Come on,that is fairytale

Smudge

Ok, so not the greatest film ever made, but also more worthy than the 1 star the critic gave it. The CGI was good, and the effects made the film. I was a little bemused by the dwarves at first, but on the whole thought they worked really well. I would have given it a 3 star rating, but due to the fact that the critic has only given it 1, which in my opinion is unduly harsh, i shall up my score to 4 stars.

Rachel

okay

Looks lovely, but yes a bit cringey in places. I thought the dwarf effects were good! Chris Hemsworth's accent wasn't that bad, I thought - I have heard worse, though not sure the rationale behind making him a Scot... But I have to agree, it did drag on a bit, and I wasn't particularly excited by any of it.

Abs

Loved it!!! Loved every minute this film has everything, action, comedy and even tear jerking moments!! A must see!

Everything this review says is true...yes it had all the ingredients of a great ilm but it just isn't...YAWN! Kristen whatsherface just can't act and a clunky plot ruins the emotions. You just don't care about anyone! Epic fail!

scrumpyjack

I liked it. Ohhhhhhhh 20 min lost wouldn't have hurt.....but COME THE F*** ON, it's a PAN'S for girls. And Kirstin looks GREAT.....as does the whole thing. Hoskins wasted though....pity, I was enjoying HIS slice of juicy ham 7/10

Tara

I saw this last night. Imagine the worst bits of fantasia mixed with the Wikipedia entry about Joan of Arc and the back cover of The Lion The Witch and The Wardrobe (not even the book but the cartoon). Imagine this and save yourself the £10 cinema ticket!

JayneM

I enjoyed this film, I thought Charlize Theron hammed it up nicely as the evil witch! good entertainment for a couple of hours....
