The prolific veteran Pupi Avati creates films staunchly rooted in genre. What's most intriguing about this period epic, however, is that he merges northern European knighthood lore with a more Mediterranean theme: a 13th century quest for the Holy Shroud of Turin. An international cast tackle their roles with gusto, notably Furlong and Kretschmann as two of a five-strong band of knights. Lengthy and lavishly produced, with plenty of bluster, mythology, and colourfully grisly battle action.
