‘Take me seriously!’ It’s the cry of many a Hollywood heartthrob when they realise that all the money and fame amounts to a hill of beans, and what they really want to do is Make Art. The latest convert to the world of Proper Cinema is Shia LaBeouf, who has finally tired of all the pratfalling and giant robots and decided to get serious, first with this tale of an American innocent who falls for a Romanian girl from a rough background, then with Lars von Trier’s considerably more promising ‘Nymphomaniac’. The early word on ‘Charlie Countryman’ following its premiere at the Sundance Film Festival hasn’t been spectacular, with critics lining up to riff on that clunky title: never has the word ‘unnecessary’ cropped up in quite so many reviews.
