This was Hammer's last 'period' Dracula before they plunged the Count disastrously into Swinging London. The plot follows the usual ploy of bringing a young couple (Waterman and Hanley) to the vampire's doom-laden castle, in this instance with the twist that they are bent on revenge. Despite attempts to restore some elements from Stoker previously omitted in the Hammer cycle (the Count is seen scaling the castle walls), and despite Lee's dogged efforts to give the Count a truly aristocratic bearing, the strained plot simply lurches from one gory set piece to another with (literally) extra lashings of sadism and sex.
