‘The Underground Train’ – Lord Kitchener (1950)
This is the age of the tube
Newcastle’s mass transit may have inspired the BBC’s epic ‘Metro: The Musical’, but it pales in comparison to Lord Kitchener’s 1950s calypso classic. The optimistic sun-always-shines-in-subterrania lyrics mask disguises lyrics about getting lost in the crowds below ground. Spookily accurate, considering Kitchener wrote the tune before he had ever even seen London, and played it to a camera crew at Tilbury Docks upon his arrival.
