The ill-assorted trio of Bogart, Ray and Ustinov play escapees from Devil's Island who take refuge with a French shopkeeper's family, and demonstrate that beneath their rascally exteriors lie hearts of 40 carats. The lowest point comes when they all line up to croak Christmas carols. Based on a French play (La Cuisine des Anges by Albert Husson), it's static and laden with leaden talk, with nothing to interest the eye as recompense. Curtiz was going to the dogs at the time, but it's doubtful whether anyone could have worked wonders with such material. Bogart looks particularly ill-at-ease and silly.
