Housed in a vast metallic warehouse, the Fondazione Pomodoro provides a welcome contrast to Milan's dim and often cavernous church-based sightseeing. As he approached his 80th birthday, the celebrated artist Arnaldo Pomodoro set up this centre, devoted entirely to sculpture, in the former Riva & Calzoni factory (maker of hydraulic turbines, including those used at Niagara Falls).
Crisscrossed by suspended walkways that lead to the various levels, the mus-eum contains a permanent collection (including many artworks by Pomodoro), a temporary exhibition space and an area devoted to their yearly young sculptors' competition.
