Alessi Outlet Store

Away from its mystical monasteries and romantic alleyways, Lago d'Orta is home to a doyen of international design. Alessi (they of the Starck-designed, spindly legged juicer) set up shop near sleepy Omegna in 1921. The company employed cutting-edge designers hailing from as far afield as Australia and Japan, who have gone on to create over 22,000 pieces of inventive homeware for the firm. Some of these now reside in New York's MoMA and London's V&A.

Although only industry specialists can peek into Alessi's 'holy of holies' historical collection, mere mortals can revel in the company's huge factory shop. The entire Alessi range is on sale, from steel and leather champagne buckets to transparent plastic egg cups; there are special offers on seconds and end-of-line articles.

I love this little outlet. The prices are great and the shop assistants are wonderful. They will patiently bring out stacks of seconds, which you may sort through and accept/reject as you wish. Personally, I find the flaws rather charming. They'll also bring out other pieces of the dishes you're interested in that may not have been indicated with the green dot because there are only a few pieces left. The staff is really very friendly and helpful. Knowledge of Italian is a plus, of course, but the staff also speaks English, German and French.

The system works like this: All the items in the showroom can be purchased at the normal outlet price. If an item is indicated with a green dot, then seconds are available at a much lower price. You can get amazing bargains, depending on what happens to be available. I don't live too far away from the shop, so I go a couple times a year to see what's on sale and complete my set of dishes.

Oh, and one more thing. Please don't remove the items from the display. You just need to ask for assistance, show the staff member what you want, and they bring all items out to a table across from the cashier's counter. It's annoying when items are missing from the display because various customers are carrying them around the showroom.
