New York Film Festival 2013: Jealousy

Theater actor Louis (Louis Garrel) leaves his wife Clothilde (Rebecca Convenant) to take up with fellow performer Claudia (Anna Mouglalis). Since the breakup is initially viewed through Clothilde’s tear-stricken perspective, the narrative trajectory seems fairly obvious. Yet nothing plays out as expected in this devastating drama, which examines how the titular emotion spreads like a virus among the characters, leaving them all in vastly different circumstances than they envisioned. Director Philippe Garrel (Louis’ father) omits none of the existential gloominess that is his stock in trade. But for some reason, this 77-minute philosophical treatise—gorgeously shot in black-and-white by Willy Kurant—cuts more to the heart than near-impenetrable Garrel efforts like Regular Lovers (2005) and Frontier of Dawn (2008). It’s a bleak beauty. Click for showtimes.—Keith Uhlich
